Baby Dental Care in La Marque, TX
At South Star Dental, we believe it’s never too early to make your child’s oral health a priority. As a skilled dentist in La Marque, TX, Dr. Saurabh Mankotia is passionate about helping new and existing patients of all ages.
Baby’s teeth begin to come through their gums between four and six months of age. It takes until they’re around three years old to have all of their primary teeth showing. Caring for their oral health between that time can keep things like bacteria, plaque, and tooth decay at bay.
Baby’s First Dental Visit
Dr. Saurabh suggests parents bring in their children for their first dental visit within their first year. The first appointment won’t consist of a cleaning or exam like it would for older children. For babies, we like to get them used to the experience, examine their teeth growth, observe pacifier habits, and more.
Caring For Your Baby’s Oral Health
Since your child won’t have teeth for the first several months of their life, it’s best to focus on their gums. Parents can use a soft, moistened washcloth to wipe their gums twice a day, especially after feedings. Doing this helps wash away bacteria that can leave behind plaque.
Once your little one’s teeth do begin to come in, you can introduce a toothbrush and toothpaste to their oral health routine. It’s not uncommon for pediatricians to suggest waiting until you have multiple teeth in a row before they start brushing.
Since your child has small hands, you’ll want to get them a soft toothbrush with a small head and large handle. If your child is younger than three, use only a rice-sized amount of toothpaste. After three years old, upgrade to a pea-sized amount.
You can help your child get in the habit of brushing their teeth by letting them pick their favorite flavor toothpaste as well! At South Star Dental, we look forward to meeting with you and your little one to help them grow and care for a beautiful and healthy smile! Call us today or book an appointment for your family online!
